Yakubu Gowon was once the leader of the nation of Nigeria. In 1966, he lead a coup against the civilian government. Gowon was head of state during the Nigerian civil war and insisted on a "no victor no vanquished reconcilation policy" and the reconstruction of Eastern Nigeria after the Biafran surrender. In 1975, he was ousted by a military coup. He later was involved in HIV eradication programs and Guinea Worm prevention.
